Budget passes with no FD layoffs

After almost two hours of public comment, the council approved a $62.2 million budget at the June 23 council meeting attended by more than 200 persons. The meeting had been scheduled weeks in advance for the high school auditorium.
The budget included layoffs of two police officers and the demotion of one captain to lieutenant. It also demoted the fire department’s only remaining deputy chief to captain. Earlier this month, five deputy fire chiefs chose to retire rather than face demotion as a result of budgetary constraints. Full Story

A bill sponsored by Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) requiring school districts receiving federal aid to develop a safety policy for field trips passed the House of Representatives by a 319-60 vote on June 15.
The impetus for the bill was the death of 18-year-old

While waiting on the procession line, a
Teaneck high school senior might have a moment to reflect on the past four years: “Did I try my hardest?” “Did I push myself enough?” “Did I accomplish everything I wanted to do?”
As the senior slowly takes steps closer to the crowd and sees the familiar faces of friends and family watching, reality sets in: “I am graduating high school tonight.”

On April 15, Gov. Jon Corzine signed a bill sponsored by Sen. Loretta Weinberg into a law that bars alimony to persons who have killed an offspring. The bill, which was co-sponsored by Senator Fred H. Madden (D-Camden and Gloucester), Assemblyman Paul D. Moriarty (D-Gloucester) and Assemblywomen Valerie Vainieri Huttle (D-Englewood) and Sandra Love (D-Gloucester) was in response to the killing of 14-year-old Matthew Calbi by his mother, Linda Calbi, in Old Tappan in August 2003.
