Election Day
(by Howard Prosnitz - May 14, 2008)
Concerns hover residents on voting day
Taxes appeared to be the main issue on voters’ minds in making their choices for the council.
Teaneck Suburbanite questioned voters about issues outside of three polling places, on American Legion Drive, DeGraw Avenue and Tryon Avenue.
"Taxes are too high," said a Highwood Place resident. "I want to continue to live in town as a single parent with two children. I don’t want to be squeezed out."
A Queens Court resident agreed. "I am tired of taxes constantly going up. They are driving me out of town."
"Taxes and paying for extra services like a garbage pickup," cited an Oakdene Avenue resident.
A Herrick Avenue resident said she was concerned about taxes but was also looking at "community issues."
"We need to preserve open space and not let Holuba build," she said.
A Grove Street resident said that her major concerns were preserving parks and open spaces and creating greater diversity on the council.
But an Elm Avenue resident sought more cohesion on the council.
"The council is too divided. They never seem to agree on anything," he said.
A Washington Place resident cited taxes and services, and a Voorhees Street resident said he wants to see more recreational opportunities, especially for young people.
Another resident northeast resident said that that while taxes were her first priority, "Some of the people running are not really Teaneck residents and the tone of the campaign is not that nice."
